#5 – Kal-Haven Trail State Park

The Kal-Haven Trail State Park stretches over 33 miles between Kalamazoo and South Haven, MI. Situated on an abandoned 19th century railroad, this converted limestone rail-to-trail rambles through beautiful wooded areas, charming farmlands, and bubbling streams and rivers. Hikers may encounter bikers during the warmer months, and cross-country skiers and snowmobilers during the winter.

The Kal-Haven Trail has also been recognized as a heritage trail. Download this trail app ahead of time, and as you hike, you’ll be notified about 31 natural and cultural historic points that also feature exhibit panels.

#6 – Van Buren State Park – South Haven, MI

Connected to the Kal-Haven Trail above, Van Buren State Park Trail adds another 14 miles of trail to hike. This trail also runs along a former railroad track connecting Hartford to South Haven, MI. You’ll gladly encounter open farmland, blueberry fields, and wooded areas featuring pine and hardwood trees. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, such as deer, foxes, and eagles.
